I bought this solid, roomy 42' ketch a year ago and brought her to a boat yard on the St. Johns River, about 30 miles west of St. Augustine, Florida. Here I've done a substantial refit, replacing/upgrading gear from rigging to thru-hulls, and installing a long list of new equipment from radar to water maker. It has been a challenging project, and fun much of the time. The result is one beautiful, eminently seaworthy cruising sailboat! I'm on the home stretch now. Water skiing is a very common hobby today. It is popular in many regions throughout the world. One of the most important factors for water skiers is their boat.

Ski boats come in a variety of shapes and styles. Usually a boat for water skiing has a very shallow hull. This gives it a very shallow draft. Another very common feature is the inboard motor (As opposed to an outboard motor) which creates much less water disturbance allowing the water skier to go faster. Water skiing relies heavily on the ski boat as the water skier is pulled in order to gain speed and be able to perform a variety of water skiing stunts. These ski stunts include such acrobatic feats as flips, turns and even ski jumps. A variety of moves are possible limited only by the ability of the water skier. While outboard motors used to be very common in water skiing, the advances in technology have effectively ended its role in the sport of water skiing.

The recent introduction of �jet� powered skiing boats has created unique and challenging areas for water skiers. The speeds attained by these ski boats is so fast that only experienced water skiers should attempt to ski behind one of these water skiing craft. The water skiing boat driver is also a very important part of the skiing experience. Skiers and boat drivers must maintain some sort of contact, usually visual in nature, so that if the water skier should happen to fall or have other problems, they can work together to avoid skiing injuries. The water skiing boat and its driver are also responsible for staying on the course set up in skiing tournaments and skiing championships. The boat's driver or captain is responsible for lining the boat and the skier up together whether in skiing slalom courses or for water ski jumps. The water skiing boat driver and the water skier have to work together as a team with the water skiing boat as their common tool.

To get to your boat you will need to use a small craft like a dinghy or inflatable tender.A mooring in a tidal area will probably mean that the boat is high and dry for some period of time and it is wise to choose one which will sit down comfortably, probably on bilge keels. If you choose to moor your boat in tidal water then you may come across the terms Mud Berth, Half Tide, and All States Of Tide. A Mud Berth is where the tide will go out and leave your boat sitting in the mud until the tide comes in again, which restricts the times as to when you can use your boat. In this case it would be worth contacting the mooring operator to find out when the best times are for using your boat. Half Tide is when the tide will be in at your mooring for about half the time of the full tide. All States Of Tide means that your boat will be afloat all of the time, moorings in these areas tend to be more expensive than the mud berths as you can use your boat at any time

They really haven't been very forthcoming, it seems. On their web site, under "charter" they state: "Copies of our Trust documents are available on request by emailing chris@oceanswatch.org" I emailed Chris, and here are the emails sent and received as of today. It doesn't cost him anything to send copies of this stuff to me, does it? So now I'm asking what does he have to hide? Anybody here know?

Just wondering how long some of you have had your solar panels? If you have noticed any degeneration in efficiency, and what brand you have? Also, if anyone can recommend a good book on solar power - drycell battery systems and energy consumption calculations (i.e. how many and what size panels are needed to power specific systems) it would be greatly appreciated.

We are looking for two or three fun experienced crew to join our trans-pacific adventure. We, my friend Chris and I (Mike) are moving a 50 ft sail boat from Los Angeles to Auckland NZ, we plan to leave LA between Dec 18 and Dec 22 depending on weather, headed for Rarotonga. As weather permits we will head on toward Tonga and/or NZ. If you are interested in joining us on this trip we would be very interested in hearing from you.This is not a paying position, but provisions will be supplied.
